MISO STUDIOS is based in NYC and Tokyo, and created by interior designers Melita Issa and Sumiko Ogawa.
The name “MISO” comes from the initials of the two founders. It also alludes to miso, a symbol of Japanese food culture that develops depth and richness over time through fermentation—much like the way our experience continues to grow and mature. The word also evokes a sense of “essence” in Japanese.
Melita and Sumiko combined have 40+ years of design experience. Their company is founded from a friendship as young designers working in Tokyo and dreaming of running their own firm one day. There is a curiosity and elegance that Melita and Sumiko bring to their work. The friendship and respect they have for each other translates into their “NO EGO” design process and belief that technology should be used to decrease the hours spent on projects not increase production time. These philosophies combined drive Melita and Sumiko to create and refine an interior design process that is focused on telling INTERIOR STORIES over just simply designing within a core and shell.
